renatochabodRenato Chabod was born in Aosta on July 28th 1909. Academic Mountaineer since 1930, he made some of the greatest climbs of his time: The South of Mont Maudit, The North of Gran Paradiso and Aiguille Blanche de Peuterey, The gullies of Mont Blanc du Tacul, The second ascent of the North face of Grandes Jorasses, The first climb of the Cerro Cuerno during an expedition in the Andes in 1934.

He was President of the “Società delle Guide di Courmayeur”, then the “Comitato Valdostano Guide”, and later the “Consorzio Nazionale Guide e Portatori”, General President of C.A.I. from 1965 to 1971 and of C.A.A.I. from 1975 to 1979, honorary member of C.A.I. since 1979. He wrote and illustrated with his own sketches and reproductions of his paintings: the C.A.I. manual "Mountaineering", the guides of Gran Paradiso and Mont Blanc; La Cima di Entrelor (a history of his mountaineering activity), Camarade prend ton verre and Montagnes Valdôtaines.

Attorney, captain of Mountain Troups, partisan fighter, member of the Aosta Valley Regional Council, Mayor of Courmayeur from 1965 to 1967, senator in single-member constituency of Valle d'Aosta for the independent movement Union Valdôtaine during the years 1958-1968, in November 1967 he was elected Vice President of the Italian Senate, post filled until the end of the fourth legislature.

He died in Ivrea on February 22nd 1990.
